American police brutality, it’s okay.
“I urge Egyptian security forces to respect and protect the universal rights of all Egyptians, including the rights to peaceful free expression and assembly,” said Hillary Clinton.
Maybe we should practice what we preach.
How to cure feminism →
Anders Behring Breivik is a right-wing extremist who carried out the worst violence Norway has seen since WWII. Breivik railed against certain groups he saw as destroying Europe’s traditional conservative, Christian society. These groups included Muslims, immigrants in general, the left, and those he called “cultural Marxists.” According to his manifesto, this also included feminists. Breivik suggested 5 ways to control women, raising the fertility rate and dealing with feminism and feminists in general:
- Limit the distribution of birth-control pills (contraceptive pills): Discourage the use of and prevent liberal distribution of contraceptive pills or equivalent prevention methods. The goal should be to make it considerably more difficult to obtain…
- Reform sex education: Reform the current sex education in our school institutions. This may involve limiting it or at least delaying sex education to a later age and discourage casual sex. Sex should only be encouraged within the boundaries of marriage…
- Making abortion illegal: A re-introduction of the ban on abortion should result in an increased fertility rate of approximately 0,1-0,2 points…
- Women and education: Discourage women in general to strive for full time careers. This will involve certain sexist and discriminating policies but should increase the fertility rate by up to 0,1-0,2 points.
- Women should not be encouraged by society/media to take anything above a bachelor’s degree but should not be prevented from taking a master or PhD. Males on the other hand should obviously continue to be encouraged to take higher education - bachelor, master and PhD.
Blogger Jen McCreight points out the most chilling aspect of Breivik’s manifesto in regards to women:
He’s right. Want to control women? Reduce them to baby making machines… The really scary part? While people while be eager to dismiss this as the crazed ravings of a madman, these are the exact tactics the religious right is using in the United States. And that’s a hell of a lot more than one person.
I would expand that to the GOP in general. The frenzied defunding of Planned Parenthood at the state and federal levels is a prime example.

At least 84 people killed in Utøya massacre →
Reddit User Sunberg put together a very in-depth collection of information surrounding the shooting in Oslo that I’ve featured below. WARNING: Some of the links below lead to images and video that are very graphic in nature.
Some bulletpoints of what happened:
- This happened at the Norwegian Labour party’s summercamp for teenagers.
- ca 600-700 people were at the island (Utøya is an island) most of them teenagers around 16 years old
- The island is about 35km / 20miles from Oslo
- The island is about 0.12km2 , or easier to visualize: 350 x 350 meters. It was also about 500-600 meter swim to get to the mainland. (via Humpa )
- Some people were trying to swim others were hiding
- Some people were saying that if you know someone there, don’t call them as they might have been hiding
- People were posting to Facebook and Twitter asking for help
- (19:10) One person was arrested.
- Photos show that many teenagers have been killed
- The shooter used many weapons, including shotgun, handgun and automatic weapon.
- Uncensored photo from the island
- Total death toll is atleast 80, and police are saying it may still rise. Most of them children/teenagers.
- Police have also found unexploded explosives on the island, and believes/almost certain that there is a link with the Oslo bombing 2 hours earlier.
- Around 30 are seriously injured, among those 20 are critically injured
- Breivik had purchased 6 tons of artificial fertilizers on the 4th of May. This is not considered unusual for a vegetable producer.
Update 09:14 Norwegian time:
- At least 84 have been confirmed dead at the island, but numbers might still rise. None of the dead have been identified yet, and the police are still searching for bodies on land, but mainly in the water as he also shot at people trying to swim from the island.
- The shooter has been charged with the maximum sentence possible in Norway (21 years in prison, however, this can be raised up until life)
- The shooter has been charged for both the Oslo explosion and the shootings
Update 09:30:
- Police has raised the estimate to a total of 91 confirmed dead at Utøya (84) and Oslo (7)
Update 15:55:
- Dagbladet writes that the police has confirmed that 85 people were killed at Utøya. However, they say numbers may still rise.
About the shooter:
He has been arrested and is being questioned by the police. This is what I have been able to gather of info so far. Police are still considering the possibility that he did not act alone.
- Name: Anders Behring Breivik
- Age: 32
- Ethnicity: Norwegian
- Considers himself a nationalist
- Interviewed childhood friends says he turned extreme right wing towards the end of his 20s.
- No earlier crimes and is unknown to the police
- Considers himself conservative Christian
- Started a company in 2009 called Geofarm and stated it would do farming. Using this company he got access to a lot of artifical fertilizers (means that this has been planned for some time)
- Created a Twitter account 1 month ago and has only tweeted one tweet: «One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100 000 who have only interests»
- Has been very active on online communities against “internationalism” (Document.no is one such site and has published all of his posts as a response to the events - norsk/english.)
- Has strong opinions against immigrants, especially muslims
- Is member of a pistol club and is a registered gun owner - has 2 registered guns
- Lived most his life in Oslo (west side), but recently moved to Hedemark (further north)
- Freemasonry member
- Was a member of FrpU, the youth wing of Frp ).
About the theory that may have been more shooters:
- Police just arrested a young man at a hotel close by in possession of a knife. He claimed he did not feel safe and it is still unconfirmed if he was involved in the massacre. He claimed he was a member of the Labour youth party (more)
- Some news sources say the police are concerned that a second shooter might be free while others say are not looking for anyone in particular and nothing is conclusive (more) (more)
- Some news sources say witnesses describe a second shooter dressed in civilian clothing and that police are investigating the witness statements. (more)
Witness stories:
(Note: the translation may not be 100% accurate)
- “He came to the island saying he was a police officer. Asked everyone to gather around and then began to shoot. He shot widely around himself. First no one believed that it actually was happening. We thought it was just bullshit, until we saw people with blood and… yeah… Then everyone began to run.”
Did you see anyone who were dead? ”I… many. Very many.” Can you say a number? ”Around 15 when I was there trying to help by the beach. People were either shot or had drowned in the water. It was not a good sight. Everyone ran towards the forrest. There were injured people who we carried. People tried to hide, but then he came to them saying he was the police here to rescue them. When people approached him he shot them.” (more in the video)- “The first thing he did was to shoot the cutest girl he saw.” (article)
- “He reloaded, shot more. He shot around me. I was lying still thinking: this is the end”. She played dead over 1 hour lying among bodies (article / blog post by the witness)
- “He shot people in the head to make sure they were dead” (article)
- “I felt the heat from his gun” … “Some people ran and hid in their tents. He went systematically from tent to tent with an automatic rifle and fired single shots. It was apparent that he wanted every shot to count.” … “Many took off their clothes and tried to swim. I tried to swim with my clothes on, which began to get heavy in the water, so I had to turn around. I hid on the beach with another group. He eventually came back and fired into the group. I played dead and lied down among the bodies. At the closest he was 2-3 meters away from me.” Adrian Pracon, a survivor, was shot in the shoulder ”I did not feel the shot at first. It was very loud and I was deaf in one ear for a while. It felt like pinch. The pain came afterwards” … “It almost seemed like he had done this before. Walking around and shooting people seemed normal to him.” (article)

Mass protest continue in Spanish capital. →
Thousands of “indignant” demonstrators are angered by politicians’ faliure to solve high unemployment and economic woes.
America needs to get the ball rolling on figuring out its debt problem.
There is only 9 days left until the August 2nd deadline before the U.S. has to default on its debt. The whole back and forth arguments with Republicans and Democrats over what is the best way to cut spending or raise the debt ceiling is a prime example of why I do not believe a bi-partisan government works; however, every time Obama tries to negotiate, Bohener fails to participate or work towards any type of agreement…it’s almost as if he wants to see this country crash and burn.
US lawmakers fail to reach agreement on debt. →
US lawmakers have failed to achieve a budget breakthrough and instead worked on rival plans in an impasse that has heightened prospects for a catastrophic US debt fault. With time running out, Republican and Democratic lawmakers split into opposite camps on Sunday and held talks among themselves. There were no signs of a deal emerging to head off a default in nine days that could trigger global economic calamity and downgrade America’s Triple-A credit rating.

Seriously, this is the global economy starting to crash.

Jesus fucking christ. They are really going to let this happen.

Norway’s attacks reveal a world of hatred.
The Norwegian terrorist who murdered more than ninety innocent civilians - many of whom were teenagers - did not act alone. Or rather, he acted within a cultural and political context that legitimises his fearful and hate-infested worldview. It is now clear that Anders Behring Breivik was exposed to large amounts of right-wing propaganda. This tragedy underlines the urgency with which normal people around the world must combat fundamentalist nationalists and chauvinists wherever they may be. But it also demonstrates the extent to which reactionary bigotry has infected mainstream thought.
Many reacted to the news from Oslo with wide eyes and a pointed finger. The most animated reactionaries took to the pages of the New York Times comment section to issue sweeping proclamations about the Clash of Civilisations and something called “the cult of death”. In many ways, readers were merely reinforcing the paper’s woefully editorialised reportage. As Glenn Greenwald helpfully pointed out, the editors of the NYT - America’s allegedly liberal newspaper - reserve the word “terrorist” solely for use in conjunction with the word “Muslim”.
When news emerged that the perpetrator of the murders - the terrorist - was a man whose religion and skin pigmentation closely resembled those of the editors of the NYT, the story changed. The terrorist became a deranged “Christian extremist” whose tactics clearly mirrored “Al Qaeda’s brutality and multiple attacks”. In that way, the paper linked the terrorist with Muslims, despite his strong antipathy for them.
Blame for the Western media’s panting pursuit of a non-existent Muslim triggerman quickly focused on the feckless, credulous, overeager and inept source of the NYT’s journalistic failure. Will McCants - proclaimed by one of his acolytes to be at the top of a “list of five terrorism experts you can trust” - was quickly discredited. In his defence, he only sought to affirm the confirmation bias that he and the editors of the NYT suffer from. The meme that underpins their worldview goes something like this: “Muslims are bad. When bad things happen, Muslims are responsible.” This is a mainstream view in the US today; it cuts across party lines.
Shaping both sides of the narrative
That the purported American left maintains this bigoted outlook is an indication of how successful the right has been at constructing the stage upon which public debate is conducted. Two main anti-Muslim talking points are now taken for granted in this country: First, all terrorists in the West are Muslims; second, we are in the midst of a global civilisational war. These are the dual planks upon which Uncle Sam squats in his Afghani outhouse.
Objective sources have done an excellent job of discrediting the first of the two claims that inform the 21st century American experience. The second point however - that we are engaged in a war of civilisations - is one that I agree with. But the combatants are not Islam and the West. Instead, the war is between the normal, sane people of the world and the right-wing zealots who see doom, destruction, hellfire and God’s Will at every turn.
Anders Behring Breivik, Mohammed Atta and Baruch Goldstein are all cut from the same rotten cloth. Anwar Al-Awlaki and Glenn Beck - the peddlers of the faith - all share the same core afflictions.
These men are insecure, violently inclined, and illiberal. The outside world scares them. They hate homosexuals and strong women. For them, difference is a source of insecurity. Their values are militarism, conformism, chauvinism and jingoism. Worst of all they seek to pressure us into compliance while they work frantically to destroy themselves - and the rest of us with them.
The war continues
All indications are that the hate-mongers - who are on the same side of this war, irrespective of religion - are winning in America. The unreflective, superficial, wan editors of the NYT are an indication of just how successful the right wing has been at eviscerating the left.
But not all liberals are created equal.
It is a credit to the Norwegian people that their prime minister did not respond to the terror attack with scorched-earth rhetoric or a carpet-bombing campaign. A real liberal with strong principles, he did not succumb to fear or vicious speculation.
Instead, he pledged to strengthen Norwegian democracy. This is what he said shortly after the terrorist attacks: “Our answer is more democracy, more openness to show that we will not be stopped by this kind of violence.” His words illustrate the difference between a society that takes liberal principles as a foundation and one that treats them as an inconvenient luxury.
Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg’s words make it clear where Norway stands on the global war on right-wing extremism. Where does the US stand?
